I think I'd be ok with leaving the first "Intermediate" stage in place, but I would like to bypass the second makeup amp and the transformers.

Seems that would be the simplest solution. If you come up with something equally easy by bypassing all the tubes, of course I'd be interested in that as well.

you might splice in a nuther 1/4 incher to let out the un amped signal, ther-by freeing you up to use a multitude of outboard make up amplifiers.

then, after you find the cleanest 24 db on earth, just build it into the amp.
