Hi David

My kit arrived today, looks really nice.

I got one of the "limited edition" matt black front panels, I really like it!

Regards
Peter

Hah, how dark's your room?!
Glad they arrived safe.
Its RAF blue-grey, like a vintage. The reissues I believe are a tad lighter and more blue

Also... I've begun adding to the manual page on the website www.thedonclassics.com/nv73manual.html

Added a little 'final assembly' video too

Actually, it is my error, I had a look at the first page & realised I was mixing up my colours.

My panel:

...and rightfully so. Sorry guys. Verbally stone me, just no tar and feathers.

Haha, Colin gave us plenty of warning. I added the partial kit to my cart twice even though I'm already transformered-up, just to avoid waiting 14 weeks for the switch!!  Common sense finally gave in. No sense in ordering transformers I don't need; November / Dec. is not too far away.

Props to AML - the only distributor on the planet who stocks this switch!!

I thought  the matte black looked *wrong* when I saw page 1 of this thread. It looks like the paint could easily be scratched off. I know that's crazy but my first thought was to gloss it over with some lacquer (sacrilege?) But everyone seems to dig the matte so I'll reconsider my opinion when the panel arrives. :)

Nice assembly video David!! How'd you get that groovy super-8 vibe?

has everyone got them except me then?
that America, Europe and South Africa, just the UK couriers having a nap...
i'm jealous.

Mr David, I have a finish question since it is the hot topic. You mention that the faceplates are powder coated. I am guessing that the matte we are digging is not from the p/c. Is there a matte clear applied after the silk screen by your screen printers? I did have a sample done by my screen printers that looked very much like yours. Only my guys won't go to the edge as they said is was too messy and runny on the edges.

I ask because I had some matte clear p/c finishes done and they are too glossy for me. Just curious.  ;)

Oh some sort of sin for sure. Don't do it!  :D

Cheers, Jeff

Hey Jeff, glad the panels are being well received... makes it worth the trouble!
It hasn't got a matte coat over the top and is purely powder coating and elbow grease.. they've definately done a good job (all be it 2nd attempt !)

Glad the UK parcels FINALLY got there... won't be using that company again!

Get going! Excited to see them all being built !

Hi, if you PM me your paypal email or paypal transaction number I'll have a look into it.  Thanks

Almost there. Just the wiring to go, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. (And I still have to measure and select the BC184Cs)

So far, so good  ;D

Wow, that's quick.. I was trying to keep up with the pace in regard to pictures/vid/tutorials but you're keeping me on my toes!  I'll post a few pics in regard to wiring but it's straight forward I think.  Just maybe some words need saying about where the trim pot wires go (follows Neve naming scheme.. Point 'P' and 'K' etc...)

LOL.  Very temping to finish it right now, but it's 1AM here and it's time to get some sleep and dream about measuring 100+ resistors...

I think the build is pretty self explanatory, and you've made hooking up the trannies completely foolproof with the small PCBs. (especially if you watch the video)

Off to bed!

Had a nice surprise waiting for me today when I got home from work. Yep, two copies of the Daily Mail! Ha! And some amazing looking NV73 boards packed in. GREAT job and congrats on getting it done David!

And on one of mine the metalwork is the limited edition black version! Or maybe the white one is the limited edition?  :-\

Anyway, one more shipment from Mouser tomorrow and it's GO TIME!  ;D

I am a vintage service technician, who has a full day of soldering on the docket tomorrow, so I won't be able to answer posts until tomorrow evening eastern time, at the earliest.

However I have the following items which maybe of interest to followers of this post.

6-8 Original Vintage Used small grey trim Marconi knobs

2 Original Vintage NOS Never Used small grey trim Marconi knobs. I believe these are in an original N*v* spares bag with the original N*v* P/N handwritten on it. Possibly by Geoff Tanner  :)

I will have to check that they are in bag. But they are NOS. These are a bit pricey.

Also have a bunch of other NOS NIB Neve bits. PM me if you are looking for something right now, I will get a list together.

I also have BC184C's for anyone that wants them.

I am thinking of offering the BC184C's as selected parts in kit with the appropriate number for this project.

So that is two that need to be over 600 HFE, and six that will be in the 400 range.

They take a bit to sort, so I am thinking $15.00 US plus S/H and 4% PP fee, per pack of 8. The two HFE +600 will be in their own bag of course. As with all parts you bought them, you own them. No returns.

I really should be at the bench so I am seeing if I should drop other pressing tasks to help you guys, and myself out.

I am in North America.

It works!!!  ;D

And it sounds good. I haven't done any critical listening so far, but it's quiet and the sound is similar to my SCA N72s.  (and I still need to calibrate it, I jsut dialed 22V at the 3055 case so far)

I'm using a 51X rack, so I left out the small PCB with the DC-DC converter. (not sure if you're supposed to do it like that) If you just leave it out you have no 24V at R51 & R56, so I jumpered, the +16 and 24 connections where the 4 way PCB mounted terminal for connecting the small PCB is supposed to go.

David: If this is not the way to do it, please let me know and I'll edit my post.

And now the hunt for some nice knobs begins...

Wow.. it's like seeing a baby being delivered (I'd imagine?!) Only less messy probably! Proud day!
Good work

Regarding the jumper.. that's exactly it yes.. just to clarify for others... you're essentially bypassing the small PCB so at the DC header, you jumper the +Vin(which is 24V now as you've picked up the 24V rail earlier[near the gold fingers] to 24V+.
