Just joined the group so I thought I would introduce myself.

I live in the UK and I have been recording for over 40 years - I made my first professional recording in 1964 for a local duo who were entering a BBC folk contest. Since then I have specialised in demos, often on location, my equipment evolving from 15ips mono reel to reel through four and 8 track until the end of the last century. At Christmas 2000 I took early retirement and moved to the wilds of North Norfolk where I now have a studio in a 200 year old outbuilding. Since then I have moved into DAWs but still have 10 reel to reel machines. I have pretty much stopped doing demos these days because for the last four years I have been busy mastering four albums for my neighbour who is a C&W singer/songwriter.

All this is a hobby; my real job was as an electronics design engineer. I even spent three years in the 70s designing desks at Neve. And that is what brought me to this group. I designed the Neve console for the Who's Ramport studios and when I went there to discuss it with them, there in the control room was the green Helios. Even then I knew that Helios had a reputation as a musicians console (although pete Townshend seemed to prefer Neves) so I was very interested to read the Helios thread on this forum. In fact I found the forum because I was planning to build a couple of 69 mic pres for my own studio.

So that's me and why I am here. I expect to be posting to the Helios thread soon.

Cheers

Ian

Welcome to the forum, Ian.

Your merits are impressing and im sure you have alot of interesting information to share.

Hi Ian
Welcome onboard. Nice to have you here. I´m pretty sure it won´t take long that people here ask the hell out you to know more about this particular Neve console (which indeed is of fame). :thumb:

 Why not start right now.

Do still have some schematics of it to share

Circuitwise it was pretty standard but it did have some 'special' features. First it had real rosewood end cheeks - no cheap veneer for the Who  The second strange thing was they wanted one continuous real leather buffer -definitely no joins. This was a tad hard because this was an old style console with a separate producers section and ISTR it was well over 20ft long - you ever tried to find a cow that long? Lastly they wanted all the silk screening on all the modules to be in luminescent ink so it would glow in subdued lighting.

I went down to Ramport for the first session to use the new Neve and the bloody phantom power supply died! Me and their tech managed to rig something up with a lab power supply. Roger Daltry turned up, looked at me in a suit, and asked, quite politely, 'Who the f... are you?' and I replied 'I am the tit who designed this console for you'. After that we got on quite well. He sent the secretary out for a crate of Blue Nun. Then we found there was no bottle opener so Daltry and I sat there with a pair of pliers and a big screw opening bottles for everyone. In the meantime the secretary had made bacon butties all round but could not find any wine glasses. So we sat on the brand new Neve eating bacon butties and drinking Blue Nun out of plastic cups.

Happy Days

Ian

Welcome Ian.

I'm presently working with another old Who engineer... a chap who helped put together the old Eel Pie studios in fact.

My own Helios experiences were with the old red Helios that was pulled out of Strawberry studios, up in Manchester.

And that very line was used in a certain well known Who song not too many months later - who knows, maybe he remembered me - or maybe he said that to everybody???

I once pondered compiling an "Insults from Rock Stars" coffee-table book. -Some insults slung my way:

"get Lost" Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats)
"You with the glasses... -F*@% off!" -Mark King (Level 42)
"You Bastard" -Rob Halford (Judas Priest)
"If you were born in the 14th Century, you'd still have been a fool... and yes, you can use that in your F#$@ing book!" Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen)
"Knob-Head" Andy McCluskey (OMD)

...there were others... but they weren't in such good humour, so I might not repeat them just yet!

some really good fellas who don't mind helping, sharing knowledge and experience.
I'm no designer, or a 'serious' studio techy, but i love all thing audio / recording etc, and I feel, that I have come on leaps and bounds, with the information, that is shared amongst fellow prodigy pro forum members.
