my assembly engineer just messed up in a really interesting way. he accidentally picked diaphragms tensioned for a completely unrelated capsule (oem project) because he'd mixed a batch in the heat treatment oven without labeling them correctly and this bizarre result occurred (green, purple is neumann):

it sounds...quite interesting, actually. would anybody be interested in an almost completely flat k87 with a high shelf that's extended all the way up to 20k? i'm genuinely thinking of making more of these.
I would be interested if you have extra. Looks interesting!

When my friend comes over with his WA87

Problems with the WA mics are more related to the really bad quality of soldering and pcb's and no quality control.
But if it works normally the sound is good, the question is for how long will it work?

I have a thread here where I dissected my WA67, it had the worst soldering job I ever seen in a microphone, and component placement and pcbs was really messy. And the mic came from factory with PIN3 shorted to ground due to a messy solder bridge between 2 traces, so it was actually unbalanced, this gives an idea of how bad the quality control from WA is when they receive the mics from the Chinese factory they outsource production from, probably the quality control is non-existent at all and the mics go straight from the Chinese factory to the distributors without any control from WA

our film supplier is inconsistent. I am courting DuPont for brand-name film. The rest of the construction is nailed down. Just running into issues where the capsules have different levels of top-end extension from different film thicknesses.

You may want to check out Hostaphan as well, if you haven’t already. They supply Beyerdynamic for sure, and I think likely Neumann also. You probably want to be looking for boPET (biaxially oriented).

Would take a lot of experimentation to figure out how to process to film industrially for microphone capsule assembly and what existing processes work the same, differently or not at all
Doesn’t Austrian Audio already use PEN? At least for their small diaphragm mic it’s in the capsule description. But it also says “thick gold-coated” …

yeah, but just because someone else has done it doesn't mean it wouldn't take other people tons of R&D time. Companies don't often share their secrets about stuff like this, you know?

I thought it’s worth adding that Sennheiser has also publicly documented using Hostaphan brand for their own branded microphones.

Hi @soliloqueen, I'm also interested in buying a flat k47, and also from Europe. If I get on the pre-order, on your site, will i get the "properly vented" capsule for bass and bass drum usage? Also what is the estimated shipping date? Many thanks, and congratulations for all the excellent and transparent work you're doing!

Soliloqueen, do you have a favorite mic body for the flat K47? I have a pair that need homes, maybe I'll start with the bodies before I decide on circuit. Thanks.

Ultimately it's up to you but something wider. I think they don't sound at their best in narrow bodies. The whole point of them is the smooth high-end extension and it can suck to put a basket resonance right in the center of that. It's better to move it lower. So a body with a larger basket like an SYT5 or obviously an m49 or u47 style body would be good. Most bodies are pretty good with it, just not something small and round. I really didn't like how it sounded in the tiny round studio projects mic I bought a while ago. I'd also be really curious to hear it in a 414 style body, which I have not had the pleasure of trying yet.

Still working on this. I don't have a solid ETA yet, but probably before the middle of November I'd hope. Things are moving forward again. But yes, you will get the vented version

I'm curious, wich Studio Projects mic? I'm really diggin my pair of B3's with your capsules, your capsules turned them into workhorse mics. Its funny even the one that has the capsule with the diaphragm that came a little loose because of the screw situation seems to sound fine. Maybe my ears are busted from years of audio work, but as hard as I try, I can't really notice a difference between them two.
I do plan on building a pair of Roger's Opic multipattern mics with another pair of your capsules, just because I'm personally really digging the natural high end sound on these opamp based designs vs the fet based. I want to built those in smaller 87 ai style bodies though. I really like mics that are compact, not to heavy, easy to handle.

Headbaskets like B3 create usually a notch somewhere in the high midrange. But there are exception to the rule if the capsule is well positioned like in Manley Ref Cardioid where this doesn't happen.
