That's a bummer, is there much difference between brands of Mylar? Just curious...
sort of. It's not a "quality" issue but more the intended use of the film. There are many kinds of PET film. The difference between the brands comes mostly from them making films for different purposes from the get-go.

The hostaphan dealer in Germany got back to me Friday saying that they have no stock of the film after invoicing me. That is to say, they spent a over a week (2 weeks? I can't remember. I've been burning the candle at both ends) quoting me for the cost of the plastic, the labor of slitting, the delivery and everything and gave me a final invoice and only when I decided to pay did they actually check whether they had it in stock or had any incoming stock. They didn't and don't. No estimate on ever having it in stock again. Ridiculous.
Incredible, real professionals at work:oops:

DuPont responded immediately and I have 6um Mylar in hand. Effortless transaction. Not my preference but it's still better than than the film from the last batch
So as far as an ETA on having more of your K87’s again, when is it looking like?

We are actually back in production on the K87 as of last Monday, but I hadn't posted yet to avoid jinxing it.
Here's one of the new units:

There are significant changes. Every part in this run is custom. Backplates, rings, spacers, screws, all from scratch. No off the shelf parts. If my third-party testers & clients approve and once I have feedback on our consistency for the first 100 units, which we should be wrapping up this week, I would like to be shipping out everyone's pre-orders halfway through December.

I know it’s nitpicking but I think ‘Mylar’ is DuPont’s brand name, and if it comes from anyone else it’s just polyester. I could be wrong though.

It's polyethylene, specifically boPET, which is biaxially-oriented PolyEthylene Terephthalate. That's PET plastic that has been stretched both lengthwise and crosswise (sequentially or simultaneously) before being heat-set under tension.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BoPET
Last I heard, (DuPont brand) Mylar was being manufactured in Asia in a joint venture with a big Japanese plastics company.

Looks great, ETA would be the same for flat k47?

in theory, i will keep you guys up to date. I am also working with my original manufacturer. If things don't align for production at the new workshop in time, I will order an interim batch in the original spec with brass rings to replace the immediately broken units and figure out where to go from there. I don't want to keep people waiting forever.

Another nitpick: polyethylene (aka polythene in UK) is a different plastic from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The two have very different physical properties.

Right you are. Today I learned that it's not (poly-ethylene) terepthalate (a chain of ethylenes with a terepthalate ending), but poly-(ethylene terepthalate) , a chain of ethylene terephalate units, so very different.

And poly-(ethylene terepthalate) is everywhere, in soda bottles and other vacuum-formed and blow-molded containers, injection-molded parts, and "polyester" solids and fabrics including Dacron. (So my Mylar-laminated Dacron windsurfer sails are biaxial sheet PET laminated with woven fiber PET, and the nonstretch Dacron rigging lines (ropes) are PET, too.)

Sorry to bug you- If I order some capsules now, are you still on track for mid-December shipping? I'm leaving town right before Christmas so just wanted to inquire about an ETA - Like, maybe I'd wait until January to order if it's going to miss me...

fulfillment of k87 pre-orders begins now. this is our first batch with all-new parts out of a brand new facility with brand new staff that I just spent the last 8 months training. we don't quite have the benefits of procedure of a larger factory. if anything is wrong, just ping me for a free replacement.

Great news! Thanks for all the hard work to get this going. It must have been a colossal undertaking.

No rush - just curious, any ETA on Flat K47's?

working on it, but not currently.

these boxes w custom foam are kind of high effort. I only had them made because I stubbornly refused to glue the diaphragms down. Now that we are gluing the diaphragms down, I think I'll switch to padded mailers after this batch.

Currently deciding whether to do brass rings on this next batch of flat k47s. I can't find a suitable plastic ring that is smaller than the diameter of the backplate and making a new mold would take a minute. I would rather get these out in the Christmas season. I know there's the long term risk of shorting over a few decades from spit but many people are waiting on replacements.
