Either plain if black is required or covered with a dress fabric for coloured surfaces - one of the suppliers here has assorted face fabric colours but don’t always suit the application requirements

The fire retardant fabrics aren't much more in cost usually.
To hand treat is a PITA, treated at the factory is worth every penny.

One studio I built the owner got some artist to airbrush the factory facing cloth on compressed glass panels with continuous drawings that ran around the walls - he used special fabric dye paint that is super thin solvent based and doesn’t bleed or clog the weave. You can buy a lot of fabrics that are acoustically transparent here as used for decorative speaker cloth but in vibrant colours and patterns or use cream or white open weave fabric and use the dye paint on that. The fabrics come already fire retardant to the required ratings for wall coverings in a public place.
