I've never heard the word used that way.No overdubs, spot mics, or panning... Capturing the room from one position.
Of course there are alternatives to that approach, but that is what I'm up to.
A stereo processor retaining an analog signal path mic to tape that can heighten existing dimensionality could be appealing.
There is the Neve MBT and the SSL Fusion as well. No sense as to how they all compare.
Mastering MS on the Gyraf G24 and the Prometheus seems to be the other likely route.
Just be careful not to make stereo width manipulations on headphones without checking on speakers. Phase differences between L-R are difficult to perceive on phones.A little 'mono incompatibility' isn't going to make the centered vocal go missing; only a tiny bit of comb filtering, which I challenge anyone to discerne over a phone, TV speaker or clock radio.
