I used to say only half in jest that we could save massive amounts of energy by painting our roofs white in the summer and black in the winter. I have been up on my roof in the summer sun, back when it was black and it was very hot from the solar heat gain. Several years ago I replaced my black shingle roof with a painted tin roof. I figured the reduced cooling cost from a light colored roof would outweigh the loss of winter heat pickup.
