Hi everyone!

Is there any chance to get the schematics of any kind of vocoder filter?
I'm looking to somewhat like the roland SVC-350 filter:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOO6xTXTeiA

Well... I feel compelled to make a sort of explanation;
Every time I build my ordinary stompbox or other diy project, like the ssl, which is the last one, my brother looks at me and ask me why I don't make a project by myself; I reply saying that I'm not an electronic engineer brainiac and I do not have any clue for conceive any kind of devices... (then he insult me ahah)
But at least, I got ideas...

So I decided to try making something that could be both analog and modern... who knows... maybe.... it's not that difficult! (ISN'T IT?)

My idea is purely based on another vocoder , the IL Vocodex (which contrarily is a digital vst...);
I often hear its unmistakable "sound" in many productions, but the goal here is to make an analog one!
Maybe, playing with an old vocoder like the roland one, it's possible to make a sort of filter module that is just the analog version of the vocodex.

The other part of my silly idea, is to have the filter coupled with a synthesizer (just an option, from a filter this would be a synth instead)

Starting from 0 is something inexplicable, I would have liked to go on with studies, but fate took another route and now I'm trying to learn by making diy project;
Maybe you'll reply that working instead of studying would have been another good option, but in this case, fate became doom, since work is something
inexistent (here)

So, I really hope to achieve finally some progress, with your help or not  ;)

Last thing, not really important btw; The synth/filter or whatever it is, originally had the name of "Steambass"

Byebye!

Vocoders are part-heavy devices.

Seems like now I've homeworks to do  ;D
I found the roland schematics too, and you right, it's harder than I thought!
The block diagram shows 5 low pass, 3 band pass and 1 high pass filter;

Typical sound of vocoder should be made by multiple band pass (hey there are some!) but now that I read the article on wiki, there must be also an envelope follower; of course, there must be also a carrier and a modulator: on the bottom of the diagram I saw the input for the vocoder, called also "Direct", which should be the modulator signal;
I'm kinda confused, it's not a single "unique" block that can be taken and used somewhere else, it's implemented all over the synth or am I wrong?
Maybe, instead of take the roland vocoder, I should take the diagram of an old vocoder and try to clone it somehow?

I do not want to perfectly reply the vocodex, controls I'm interested on are the bandwith controls (this should regulate the Qs of all the band pass filters together), the order control (I'm still studying how to realize in analog style...), Filter's frequencies controls and Gains for Carrier and Modulator;
I'll try drawing a GUI today, and sketch in other ideas, who knows... (I dreamed of a guitar with integrated circuit inside... whops it already exists  :p)

I'll really apprecciate if all of you would like to join this project; I know it's kinda different from what this forum is used to do; Open source Diy project would be a nice addition for this forum or not?  ;)

mmm doubts, doubts, doubts, moan, moan, moan

little OT: Hey Gyraf, I want to say you thanks for the great gssl project you put on your website; It's really, really instructive, funny and hopefully it will be a lot satisfying! so thanks a lot  ;D

back in 80'es there was a simple diy vocoder, based on 4069 cmos-inverters as opamps and transistors as crude vca's in either Elektor or ETI magazine. Try to look up those...

ah  :) 1980 forged the best devices imo;

You also forgot the Okita vocoder, but you have to know katakana  ;D

Anyway, thanks again Jakob (uhm we have also the same name :p)
Now I think I have enough material to start working on the schematics! Hopefully...

If you dare seeing it, the project have now a different layout;

I'm sure there are a lot of mistake, but this is just a "concept"; I also know that trying to imagine the resulting sound is just not possible yet;
I just like to invent new instruments  ::)

I'll take a break for now; hope to see someone else here, and know better people over there.
Byebye!

PS: I don't know if I gone too OT for this section; if so, move it to the proper section, thanks!
