An Optimistic Take On COVID-19...

https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2020/03/an-optimistic-take-on-covid-19.php?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=sw&utm_campaign=sw

Lets try and imagine the shoe on the other foot for a moment ,
Suppose someone besides the USA found an effective vaccine or improved treatment regimen and they said they wouldnt share it with the US ,Donald Trump wouldn't think twice about applying sanctions which would end up punishing who ever it was very  severely . The Germans have said if they do have luck with a vaccine they will make it available to the world ,not for profit ,not for backhanded deals on the quiet, simply because its the only humane thing to do . As I said in a previous post about this ,it just goes to show the cloth Trump is cut from that he has the brass necked temerity to think he could go straight in ,buy up the I/P and use it for the purpose of applying leverage or coersive force  in his game of thrones.
Anyone who refuses to see unbalance in D.T's actions might be as well to check the accuracy of their own emotional spirit level .

Interesting take on the numbers. Pity he did not extend his analysis to prior pandemics like the one at the end of WW1 then I might give it more credence.

PS. If he is right it could be all over by the end of June in which case no prizes for guessing which group of people are going to claim credit for it.

Cheers

sounds like Trump gonna be hero with this Chinese virus  ::)

Not to change the subject away from politics and racism, it appears some old malaria drugs may be effective... A lot of smart people are working hard on this...

but I was always the optimist here....

thats a week old news! i am very optimist too...

Rump is pissed that all his economical gains have been wiped out, no longer making him the greatest president who ever lived. So in anger he has chosen to call it the Chinese flu which does absolutely nothing to help this worldwide problem,

The primary purpose of calling it the Chinese flu is to reinforce the fact that the man is a complete idiot.

Please note that rump is the only person in the world using the term Chinese flu.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to separate the wheat from chaff or wood from trees on this whole subject now .
Its almost like you can find what ever angle on the story that suits your world view with a little digging down.

In relation to vapes ,I did read somewhere vitamin E additives in vape liquids are one possible cause of the so called popcorn lung syndrome, that said theres many different food grade ingredients for flavour added too , while most of these things are safe for consumption nobody envisaged them used in this way , adding various chemicals together and heating is a great catalyst for chemical reactions ,the results of which are anybodys guess .

I still try and get out most days for walks like many others , despite the uncertainty and clear and present danger people are in good enough spirits I find, in fact id say despite keeping to a safe distance people are actually making more of an effort to pass the time of day others along the way ,or make sure their neighbours are safe and sound .

That's not a "week old news" ....
This is scientifically documented since months now in China and South Korea.

Here in France we have a well know epidemiologist scientist that follow and improve more or less the protocol few week ago on contaminated volunteer... what happen ? since 3 week or more it was called a fake... even at official health minister website... (for 36h before the pull out the "fake news alarm")...then ?....silence

I just don't get it... except western country that can't admit chines science is good and can solve "issue" before we even think of it...

Chloroquine (coupled with specific antibiotic to avoid bacterial lung over infection)  still have issue and problematic side effect
BUT this is well know treatment since decades !!! and you can anticipate/adapt with specific patient
This is a low cost drug, easy to synthesize and manufacture...but maybe we wait for a patented vaccine...

Data are clear... Cov19 viral charge is high about 20 days (average)... if you don't die in the mean time... this treatment give 85% of patient "clean" in 5 days

If I'm right, that's how South Korea  (China can always be blamed with biased number) get low average fatalities wile being one of the most impacted coutry

That's my 2c... but we (EU...UK..US...) realy fuck't'up

Best AND KEEP SAFE

UCLA in CA testing too!

edit: this is pretty much every country has news like this!

The Chinese authorities sucesssfully stopped the spread by imposing the following measures:

1. Impose wide-ranging curfews and systematically test people in infected areas.
2. Those who tested positive are moved to isolation centers. No self-isolation.
3. People with severe conditions were moved to specially designated Corona virus hospitals or at least special, sealed of wards. No mixing of virus patients or staff caring for them with patients being treated for any other conditions.

It's draconian, but I fear it's very unrealistic to assume all people are willing and able to properly self-isolate.

Authoritarian governments have options that free western nations do not. It is hard to draw accurate lessons from china as they censor the news coming out of there. Reportedly some citizens make morse code out of emojis to sneak messages out, but since that has been reported in the western press I can't imagine the Chinese censors not already stopping that. Thank you news media for helping the Chinese government once again.  :-[)

China just ejected 3 western reporters, presumably over a headline they say insulted China (probably more going on than that). They have still refused to let CDC experts in to study what happened in Wuhan.

Making precise future predictions about exponential progressions is difficult without very accurate growth variables, but that doesn't stop media from trying to scare the public with large numbers.

I have lost track of how many positive initiatives are in the works. I am seeing more cooperation between government agencies and even the political parties than usual, but the regular suspects still use every opportunity to take cheap shots.

I am not a fan of dropping helicopter money on the public and industry to relieve economic slowing. This will only increase future reliance on a maternalistic government while we are already deep in debt. Nicki Haley resigned from the board of Boeing over plans to lobby DC for a bail out. Good for her.

Now if I could only get my neighbors to stop hoarding toilet paper... what could they be possibly thinking (rhetorical don't answer) ?

I don`t think there's enough helicopter money around to pay for this one.

As far as individuals:  what exactly would you propose instead?  Unemployed folks (and there's a sh!t ton right now, believe me) evicted and either on the streets or couch surfing with friends, potentially worsening the epidemic?  What about all the businesses that could potentially go under, or at the very least lay off even more people, without the $$$ the un/underemployed will no longer have to spend?

And why weren't you worried about debt when Republicans passed their tax cut for the rich and big corporations?  Govt. debt skyrocketed during a boom time with near-full employment because of that tax cut.  Why have youu decided to be so concerned about debt now?

You must mean Trump, right?  Starting a pissing contest with China and half the country with his race baiting name for the virus. Maybe that it isn't such a good thing in a leader in a time of crisis? Not everyone accepts Trump's 'personality' like his hard core supporters. It's not incumbent on everyone else to placate things while Trump picks fights.

Some old pattern: loot things when in power then switch to howl about the deficit after the tide goes out.

You notice the conservatives warn against payments to individuals, when the far bigger payout is going to be the bailouts of corporations.  Trump has already been talking about bailing out industries.

It is now coming out that Senior members of Congress were informed of how dire this pandemic would likely be back at the end of January. Republican Burr warned wealthy donors and sold millions in stock.  Others did as well. These people need to go to jail.
The financial records of Trump and all of his family need to be examined after the dust settles. While Trump was downplayings this publicly - how this was a hoax, just the flu, etc... was he just in the know about the tsunami that was coming?

How after a 11 year bull market with high profits, can companies not have any rainy day fund?  Because moral hazard is dead? Privatize profits, socialize losses.
Incredible all these staunch fiscal conservatives yelling for bailouts now were screaming about the dangers of socialism only last year.
Remember at the last collapse it was Republicans George Bush and Hank Paulson (staunch conservatives) organizing the bailout.

Congress has immunity from this.  It’s also bipartisan behavior but same people pushing these partisan arguments.

This has just turned into a Political bitch thread in the last few days and lacks any meaningful advice for dealing with the Pandemic.
