I have requested a quote to get some magnetic shields custom made for use with UTC O-series transformers

The company is the same that makes the shields for Sowter, if you are familiar with their transformers you will recognise the look from the picture

The part on the left is more expensive, because is made with deep drawn tooling. The part on the right is fabricated and welded and it should cost between £35-£40 (plus shipping costs from UK to wherever you are) This second option is probably good enough

If there is any interest please register here, if we can get to a decent quantity to even out the tooling cost I will be happy to set up a group buy and take care of payments and shipping

Question: will they be correctly heat-treated to ensure they retain their MU-Metal properties after they are created? Otherwise MU-Metal loses it's permeability/properties if not re-annealed and treated somehow. I am not an expert at this but I know at least this much.

Looks good, although I like the can on the left better. Also the original cans had screw holes in the top - will you be adding those as well?

Thanks,

Mike

I think 40 quid for a transformer can is rather prohibitively expensive.
I have russian transformer shielding cans, they are mu-metal, copper coated and painted hammer silver, pm if interested.

I agree expensive. I haven't seen them for less than this, even on the bay however.

The company is specialised in mu- metal shielding, and as I said they regularly supply other audio transformers manufacturers as well. They probably know what they are doing. The cans are heat treated to MSL1153-HTA

The can on the left is about £12 more expensive. In my opinion the shiny look is not worth the extra money...

The photo is just an example to see the two different manufacturing processes. The can for the UTC O- series will obviously have the correct dimensions and mounting holes

I am not trying to make a profit on these, I can understand for some the price might be too high, but that's what I have been quoted from the company, and the tooling costs to get a custom job done for a small amount are quite significant

Yes I can understand; thanks for sharing.

At that price however it's almost easier to buy vintage cans. Only problem is they are hard to find.

they are certainly hard to find and almost every time they pop up on ebay are being sold together with a transformer, which might be an useful model for diy clones or not

this group buy offer was meant to be more useful for someone that is looking for a quantity,  who needs just one or two cans it's probably better looking on the used market

I will most likely have 6 UTC o-17 shielding cans for sale soon.  If this group buy doesnt go through would anyone be interested? I dont really need them for the transformers I am using. :)

I may be in for 1 or 2 depending on price. Let me know. Thx.
