Anyway I think all the parts are quite easy to find, I was having much more problems with the SSL 9k, those MAT02 are hard to get for a good price, and the inductor was a pain also.

For this project what I would like the most, would be, being able to get a supply of BC184 from another brand besides Fairchild Semi, some brand with better quality. If anyone knows please tell me.

As for the 2N3055, I was fortunate enough to get 2 Motorolas, but the On Semi and Toshiba look like good alternatives.

Transformers and Switch from Audiomaintenance makes everything simpler , specially for Europeans.

also check this:

PSU from JLM , or modify an SSL9K PSU

PAD , PHASE, 48v Switch - JLM Go Between

DI input - JLM DI

Just wanted to double check the part "Mouser 512-BC184C" "Transistor NPN 45V 500mA HFE/8 BC184C"

RS have these 16 T092 choices in stock

438-0574, 438-0568, 544-9286 I'm guessing the ON Semiconductor is the best of these available?

or 131-1430 Fairchild?

I'm sorry, don't know if I understood.

from the link you posted it seems that RS doesn't offer BC184 transistors.

You find them in farnell:
http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp?N=500006+1000014&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=Bc184&Ntx=

only Fairchild Semi brand , but they are fine.
I would just like to get some other brands also, and yes, if you find On Semi Bc184 I'm sure they would be a bit superior in quality. But maybe it would not be even noticeable.

Digikey, Mouser and Newark only offer Fairchild.

The most important thing on the BC184 is buying quite a few of them (20 or 30 instead of 5), and selecting BC184C's with Hfe > 600 for lower input noise.

when i ordered my parts for the 1290 i took the board and a black sharpie....
each part ordered had a black dot and counted...took me 1 hour to order everything.....

I dont see the point in complaining about ordering parts!!

All it takes its patience and some care!

Hope it helps.

Cheers Whoops! ;D

i was only looking in RS as Farnell was out of stock of 1017657 / BC184C

Will wait for them to get stock.

Quite easy for us Newbies to easily order the wrong parts as many of them are very similar ???

A little knowledge can be very dangerous ;D

I did exactly the same, and all was fine.
Although I totally understand people that ask for a simple and detailed Parts list.
It helps everyone.
Have you seen the Drip LA-2A  pdf? it's amazing!

yepp, I get what you mean. I'm always getting confused.
what helped me was reading all the threads from the beginning to end about this project, and at the same time doing a compilation of the
important information in a word file.
It took me a full day, but at least I got more confidant and learned loads!

After few months of the completed project i had a tracking session  to my surprise none channels were working!!!!

I had a few issues....cracklings..........random noises.....and took them to the bench....

everything seems fine!!!

what went wrong??

Tanks.

That's really weird.

I Had a guitar pedal that never worked at my bass player's House.
It worked at home, in gigs, everywhere.
But never at his house. (Tried it hundreds of times) never figure out that.
LOLOLOL

I don't have a band with him anymore!

This pre is driving me nuts!!!!!! ;D

its like fighting with the wife...good times are apreciated... ::)

First of all....when first powered i got a hum wich slowly fades away after 10-15 seconds.......
2nd of all.....if i switch microphones i got a phased distorted signal.......but again 15 seconds later comes back to normal....

i dont know if something is missing.....i go from XLR in goes to  Go between 1 goes to 0V, 2 goes to +,3 goes to -  JLM Go between with a FET DI...then i go to the CMMI-2C from Go between - goes to Red, + goes to brown....white and black goes to 0V and Orange goes to input board..Yellow goes to Shielding...

the same thing happens if i use a condenser....

I know i'm the only one using this Cinemag so it can be difficult to troobleshoot!!

when everything goes away this pre sounds amazing! quiet and with a ton of gain.

Cheers...

Hi 3Nity,

I'm currently on vacation; trying to keep computer use to a minimum, but wanted to offer some help.

What are you using for PSU? How's the rail look?

Have you checked the voltages?: http://www.musiciansgig.com/ez1290/transistor_voltages.pdf

Also, check the tightness of the 2N3055 screws. Sometimes you can get some dissimilar metal funk going on here.

If that all checks out, I would try wiring the input transformer direct to the EZ1290 board.

All the best for 2009 everyone!!

M.

thanks Martin.
I figure out the psu is nuts not me!

i ordered a JLM psu kit and a new power transformer!!

the phantom was inducting hum into the microphones..

Thanks.

Isn't it great when you find out its the components not you that is to blame?

Glad you found it.

Jim

If I run my phase switch after the output, all the way to the front of the case to the toggle, then back to the rear of the case where the XLRs are, do I need to use shielded cable?

I'm having trouble getting these wired-in using minimal wire routing and back and forth. I know a relay is one solution but I haven't a clue how to do one.

Are you trying to same some bucks on wire bro? ;D
its very easy use a JLM Go-between !

Or better again invert the xlr cable! that would be the best solution!

Hi guys,

I'm making a 4-channel 1290 in a 2U rack and was wondering if this arrangement of in/out xformers is OK in terms of crosstalk and/or oscillation etc... Can I stack the output trafos that close to each other? How about input ones? I know it's been covered partially in this thread, but mostly implied that one shouldn't put the input trafo too close to the output one. Is there gonna be a problem (like one channel picking up another's signal etc.) stacking them like on the picture? Thanks!

From the looks of that I'd think you might have problems, but not 100% sure. I've seen others do it but don't know what their success is.

I'm building the same and don't think you're going to have enough room to put 4 boards side by side unless you mount them at an angle.

Double checking that this phase switch routing diagram looks right. Is it correct that only 2 wires go to the DPDT switch (Pins 2/3), and that Pin 1 goes directly from the XLR to the input traffo?

Also, for the wiring for this and the phantom, I suppose I can just use some 24 gauge hookup wire?

Zachs.
pin 1 to ground, (pin 6 on the Carnhill) and follow the assembly pdf.. and yes phase only flips pin 2 and 3.

Wire for Phantom is fine as it dont carry a lot of current.

Jorge.
