Oh, wonder if I could do the same thing Neumann did and temporarily use machined phenolic or reinforced epoxy rings. It might be possible to get a PCB manufacturer to make fr4 rings similar to the fr2 rings neumann used. There's also acetal and polypropylene.

PP changes size too much with temperature I think.

Currently deciding whether to do brass rings on this next batch of flat k47s. I can't find a suitable plastic ring that is smaller than the diameter of the backplate and making a new mold would take a minute. I would rather get these out in the Christmas season. I know there's the long term risk of shorting over a few decades from spit but many people are waiting on replacements.
Forgive my ignorance but what is the downside to brass rings?

Over many years, salt from spit and dust will accumulate and eventually it can form a conductive pathway from the diaphragm to the backplate. This takes a very long time. Essentially, the capsule needs to be cleaned more often if the rings are brass. The difference is significant but we're also talking over a very long term. Like every maybe 15 years of vocal use with brass rings versus every 25 with plastic rings. This is highly variable. I have seen vintage capsules with brass rings that still function perfectly many decades later without any cleaning because they weren't on vocal duty. It's difficult to quantify. Maybe someone who has more experience with brass rings in studio use could chime in. It doesn't affect the function of the capsule, but it's good practice to have insulating rings.

It's been a week since I received these two capsules. When I saw the new capsules for the first time, I felt that the build procedure was much more refined. For me, v1.5 is an improvement over v1.0. The low frequencies are more transparent and the high frequencies are smoother. Of course v1.0 was already the best K87 capsule I've ever used. v1.5's improvements bring this capsule to an even higher level. As Arienne said, when the new diaphragm arrives, it will be available on v2.0. I'm looking forward to v2.0 as well. I did a quick audio comparison. I hope it's helpful.v.pngv1.5.png

looks like the auto translator fails (happens sometimes) here's quick english text of the above:

"V1.5" is V2 with Toray Lumirror instead of Hostaphan or Mylar. I did manage to find and solve the issue that was causing the highs to be plasticky. My old capsule had less at 5k but more at 7k very close up compared to the Neumann, but that's been corrected now. The capsule is a bit less V shaped overall. Overall, it's a way closer replica than the first version.

So the „V1.5“ is what i will get after ordering the ‚clearance‘ capsules in September?
Anyone who ordered one before the V2 was announced or ordered a V1 on clearance back before I lost my clearance stock will get a V2 capsule made with Toray film (same as the previous version) to avoid further delay. This is just kind of how it worked out procedurally. I'm not really making any money shipping out essentially a V2 with one minor difference at the V1 clearance price, but it is what it is. I need to get the ball rolling again, so the best solution is that everyone gets a better capsule than they bought.

I think it’s often about how much dust is on the diaphragm (in this context), because that’s what causes breath moisture to remain on the diaphragm for long enough to get the capsule cutting out or making noise. Spit will contribute to the amount of dust that sticks onto the capsule.

I have developed a capsule cleaning process that is superior to and unlike any published methods, without the common pitfalls. It’s hard to say if I would want to clean any of these so far into the future, but anyone can at least feel free to reach out. I’m a bit on the fence regarding whether it’s something that makes sense to offer as a service given all of the factors involved; guarantee feels frocked with peril considering all of the things that can be wrong with a mic (or the owner of it!). I don’t know if it makes sense time or money wise either. I currently just use the process for refurbishing my own gear and things I flip.

Just for the sake of clarity, if we order a K87 from the webstore now, are we getting an interim batch or the final V2 design? A little confused about the different film versions.

It depends on when the film distributor ships us the film. It's supposed to be by the end of this month. You could get the same capsule with either film. The best thing to do is just to put a note in the order specifying which film you want and then I'll delay your order until the requested film is in stock.

Originally, all the stuff was supposed to launch at the same time with a new website and there wasn't going to be an interim batch but then lots and lots of bad things happened. Honestly, most people would just announce the new version of the product and sell the version with Toray film as v2 and do a silent revision of the film later with no public statement to avoid confusion, but I'm too transparent, so now everyone is exposed to how confusing the situation is. As a business decision it's pretty poor but I don't like not disclosing things to people.

The Toray film isn't really worse (unless you don't know what you're doing), it's harder. The uneveness of the tensile strength across the machine and transverse directions make it more difficult to tune the diaphragm correctly. This slows down production but they're all matched to the same curve so the end user difference is minimal.

I wouldn't call that too transparent. Shit happens, and it's good everyone knows what they're getting. I'm sure it's just part of the migration process, and in a few weeks or months things will have normalized. Looking forward to the first reviews of V2.0, might get one for my D87 and sell my V1.0 to a friend to put in his micparts S87.

The new version is a massive improvement over the old version, regardless of what film is used. I sent one with Toray film out to get some feedback and asked about differences between that capsule and a real k87 and they couldn't even articulate differences. Here's a live reaction to the capsule in an 87 clone (it has swearing so be careful):

To quote one of my initial reviewers: "It doesn't even sound like a good clone. It just sounds like a Neumann capsule."
There are 10 of these out in the wild right now. Very excited to see more reviews.

Are there any noticeable differences in Frequency response between Ariennek87 v1.0, v1.5 and v2.0?
Will the graph for v1.5 and v2.0 be published?

Honestly, I really liked the sound of the v1.0 version. On some softer vocals it works wonders in the mix. I think it's great to have microphones with all versions of the Arienne k87, with different flavors, for different scenarios. It's just my opinion.
(In my madness, and influenced by Kingkorg, I collected 12 Behringer B1 and B2-Pro, 6 Studio Projects B1,C1,CS-1, with through hole components not smd, many Rodes fet and tube, I modded them in different ways and they all sounds different 😁. Plus others of different brands, also modded. Only my old Neumann TLM103 remained untouched, it sounds like the first day. I bought it in 1999.
So, we never have enough microphones! 😂)
