The basic construction of wiper based pots has not changed in quite a while...conductive substrate shorted to the center pin via the wiper... could we pirate the wiper system by bending the housing pins on a common carbon comp pot and then replacing the wafer with a custom made pcb meant to hold smt or 1/8th watt through hole resistors ?

Didn't some old faders do this? I remember an EQ schematic that had a "fader" doing just this.
