Hi Chaps,

We are getting there, we are just debating some final tweaks, come this far and dont want to rush it, we are aiming for end of February to be on sale.

Yes you will need output stage and TX, at least with my boards you will.

£100 expensive for transformers?? compared to a real one??

Pete

Hi Pete,

Can you give a guesstimate for the costs to build one ? (the board with all the components / pots/ switches, excluding frontpanel, enclosure, psu, connectors).

plainly curiosity of course !  ;)

It's coming along,

just a quick post..

this should come back as a prototype in the next 2 weeks, Ill build it and test it and then we are good to go.

this prototype does have multiple PCB's that we are testing, on the "real" ones they will be scored so they can broken up and used where needed,  on this PCB is a phantom48 pcb, top left..next section along is the on board regulation, which if you were using multiple PCB's you would only need to stuff a single section, and then we have provided away to link them together...

once we have tested this i can come back with more finer details...

Pete

It will be expensive, because I built eight preamp boards :)

Here you can hear sound samples:

BTW Are there BC416 and BC 413 available worldwide? If not I can provide. I have a lot of them.

Hi Chaps -

we are only weeks away, a single prototype board is being made now and will come back in a few days. then ill build and test and we should be good to go. so not long now!  ;D

re 416 /413

that's a great offer, very kind.

I have found in short they are not readily available, I did how ever lay my hands on a few, and in tests comparing 550/560 184/214 & 416/413 I found no measurable difference.

but if the originals are available then why not go with them.

Best
Pete

I'm hoping I can build a few of these. If you make pcbs available I'd like to get a couple. Will they be small enough to fit in a 500 series format? I'm also curious what transformers you'll be using. Do you know the specs of the originals?

re transformers

We have used Sowter replacement 7456f and Carnhil 1148, works a treat.

PCB is 88mm wide, but i fear it might be too long to fit inside a 500 series chassis. But mind you the rail voltages are nothing like what is in a API chassis.

As far as the sound samples are concerned, is that with no eq and what microphone(s)?

I captured the drums with two Sennheiser MD421, but I think they are a bit different sounding. I am considering one common mic connected to the two preamps in the next test.
The trident preamp is connected directly to the N-12 ADC. No EQ/FX/Editing. Because I used only one preamp, the drums are tracked separately (snare+hihat, kick, tom1, tom2).
The channel PCB size is 2cm x 15cm
Here are some pictures of the 8ch (6 at the moment) hard-wired board:

looking good well done.

this is just the preamp, so how did you interface to the outside world without the balancing TX?

and how much gain does your circuit have?

Best

I am sorry - forgot to mention that I use sowter 7456 600/30k Very high level input. 1:5.9 for input. Output is not balanced, because the mixer insert is unbalanced. The test board gain is fixed to 2x amplification. Considering the input TX 5.9x it gives me a gain of 10-12x. The mic signal is near 60mV. BTW we can discuss the technical details for the circuit - biasing, design...

The Tridents run on +24/-24v, yes? I was thinking of 51x. If the pcb is <125mm long it will work, with one of Silent-Arts edge connectors.

just curious...

anybody drive a transformer
with those TO-39 s  yet?

in a console they would just feed a bus,
some times thru a pan pot, and that's about it

I prepared new shootouts with common microphone:
http://mixperience.net/samples/shootouts/trident_a_range_vs_n12/a4.wav
http://mixperience.net/samples/shootouts/trident_a_range_vs_n12/b4.wav

Snare - Shure SM-57
Toms - Sennheiser MD421
Kick - AKG D112

They sound identically to me. I will be glad if someone can hear a difference, because I spent a lot of time and money to implement these preamps :(

What are you doing a shootout of???
I understand you built a DIY trident A range preamp. Do you have an original that you are comparing to?
