Yes, great idea ENS.

I am working on re-vamping the design for metric (which I should have done in the first place!)
Also redoing the head basket as close to original as possible.

Once this is done, I have several places I want to submit the design to; I will add CNCZone among them.

guavatone,

In short, emachineshop sucks.
-you have to use their proprietary CAD package (which is a total piece of <expletive>)
-once you spend hours drawing even the simplest of parts, the price is at least 2x what your local machinist would quote you off of a scribble on a cocktail napkin (stonehenge anyone?).

Sorry, I'm not trying to be disrespectful; emachineshop IS useful for people who don't have a CAD package, have an infinite budget, and lots of time to kill.

Above all, thank you for the suggestion.
And you're right, freelance guys will most likely have better prices than emachineshop. Actually, now that I think of it, emachineshop has the highest prices I've seen anywhere!

Just a note of thanks and encouragement to Skylar and Moby and everyone involved.  Good work all, getting majorly excited over here in snowy nyc.

Thanks for the tip Skylar.  I think this will be one of the coolest projects to come out of this group.

I'm still waiting for response about head basket tube  But it seems that body will be possible for about 80EUR  ;)

excitement growing :)

a big thanks to all who've been involved !!

This is going to be really great, expect lots of demand !!

Just saw this:

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/geekslutz-forum/359712-u47-clone-clm-shop-looks-cheap.html

i have no objection to aluminum. im more concerned that the head basket is accurate. i googled CLM mics and got nothing.
i believe the "hating" has to do with calling this mic a U47 clone when it is not and the price (which no one seems to mention) for what your getting. i think the thread author was saying the body and headstock appear to him to be worth about $50.
i'd like one if we can find them for $50.

I finally found the source for brass tubes. Body (60mm) is available right now and for head basket will be in next few days. If we organize I will need to order around 15m of 60mm and (if we decide to go with 4 parts head basket) 3m meters of larger diameter. 60mm is "standard" size and it's widely available so it can wait, but 63mm is hard to find so I will purchase that 3m right after manufacturer confirm me. It can be  risky to me but I can't wait  ;D I want this happen'  ;) So, the body and head basket will be brass-copper , mounting rails - steel and end cap, capsule mounting disc will be from aluminium. What you think about this?  :)

Some questions and thoughts since you seem super excited!

Have they fabricated a prototype?  even out of different material.  It would be good for you to see a prototype before making a big commitment on materials.

Are they also making the headbasket with the wire mesh?  or is this 4 part head basket just the lower ring, upper ring and 2 side braces?

It all sounds good to me.... i just would see a prototype before making a big material purchase!

caution!

Of course, prototype first  :) But, I would like to do exact one, or say from proper material. Head basket will be from parts, no mesh, at least it's not a big deal to DIY. Assemblig 100 of headbaskets  will take some of time-money so Skylar suggested that "kit" is welcome. Also, mesh measures are not clear yet...  :-\ Unfortunately for making prototype I need that hard to find 63mm tube  :(
Hehe, super-excited... well I spent few weeks "hunting" that damned tubes  ;)

Moby,

Before you purchase the tube, I strongly advise against tube for the headbasket!

Especially for the 4-piece design.

If you use tube, it will be extremely difficult to assemble a headbasket that looks nice and is (more importantly) stable.

This is because you need an inner mounting ridge to help keep everything square and together.

I mentioned this in an email offline, but these headbasket "rings" should be lathed/turned from a disc of brass (sometimes called "rodstock") in order to shape this feature.

Here's an example of the inner mounting ridge I'm talking about.
For the record, I believe ioaudio brought this concept to my attention in an earlier post on page 6 (thanks!).

As you can see, the ridge not only provides a place for the rails to butt up against, but also provides a shelf for the mesh, which would be very difficult to secure otherwise.

Cool, I stopped the thing. I don't have that drawing. So, instead of tube what you suggest? If we go with 63mm rod it will cost a hell  :(
