U47-style bodies - who can make one?

I don't mind finishing myself but it would be nice to have all the proper screen's, screws, etc....

OTOH, a completely finished body/basket/psu-case would be awesome...

A doner (nady 1050) with PSU can be had for about $250-$280 or so... But in my mind this solution seems engineered to be replacement-grade for a U47.. No real comparison to a badged-doner...

For me finished or not comes down to difference in cost between the options.

I might end up going for a couple finished 47's and other franken-mic's unfinished down the road...

Cheers,
jonathan

Here's something to consider too:

The fewer number of finished kits needed, the higher the price of such kits.

That is only if you out-source it correct?
If you and your co-workers end up doing it, It'd be smarter to sell the kits and then just charge XXX amount $ for your guys time.

I'm not going to pretend like i've built a mic body before but If I feel confident enough to restore an old muscle car, than it'd look funny if i couldn't assembly an mic body.

I'd rather learn something new with my own hands vs paying a higher $$$

but with all that aside, if the bid gets down to target qoute, than i can see skipping the hassle of a parts kit.

a parts kit makes a lot more sense, considering this is D.I.Y
in one hand I feel as if people wanted a ready made mic from the jump they should of bought an donor microphone to begin with.

just my .02

rambling again, lol no harm no foul hopefully i've not offended anyone?

if they are to be finished what of a gold plated finish on the headbaskets? thats what I had in mind, with a nice candy paint on the mic body!

:)

Ciao!

If me and my "team" assemble the headbaskets, we'll have to have tooling fabricated and purchase various other tools/materials to complete the job efficiently and consistently.
So, there's an investment there. The more finished headbaskets we make, the lower the cost is to you.

I don't think you've offended anyone...no worries.

At this point, it seems like most people will want a finished mic body that they can just throw their capsule/circuit into.
But I know there will be a few who want just the raw material. Personally, I would want the just the raw material too!

When all of the pricing comes in, I'm sure it will be easier to figure out which options to offer.

I add my vote to a complete kit inc mic body and PSU.

I'd rather pay more and have it done right than attempt a half assed job at doing it myself. If I'm going to spend several hundred dollars on parts like the M7 capsule, mount and the MK7 kit from Max I'm going to be willing to spend a bit more to make it not only sound but LOOK good with a custom mic body.

Heck I think the U47 type clones that are commercially available, even the budget guys like Peluso and Pearlman (using chinese bodies) cost in the region of $1,500 - $2,000, our completed mics, with better parts will be WAY less than this.

Skylar, again, thanks mate! What an awesome project, look forward to reading the updates and seeing how we progress with it.

Cheers

Yeah, kinda makes you wonder how little those guys pay for those bodies... Really dislike the look and the feel of the Chinese metal work on those, and will continue to say so as long as they keep claiming 'made in the USA", and "hand-crafted in our Floyd County, Virginia Lab"...

i would be in for 1, maybe 2 finished kit mic bodies and possibly one PSU case (all dependent on price).
though, i'm with Tommypiper in that sometimes you might want to experiment with the grill layers so maybe formed grills, but removable layers (if that makes sense).
thank you everyone whose worked so hard on this awesome project.  especially skylar and all his great designing, tweaking and sourcing! (thumbs!)
great work guys!
kind regards,

This thread is truly an awesome read. Skyler - your dedication is inspiring

I personally would be rather a finished body but I guess cost should be the chief determinant for everybody.

Thanks Skylar for dedicating on this! I'm in for two bodies and propably two psu depending how much they add.

Hey Matti are you Finnish? How about grouping up on shipping to save some euros? 8)

glad to see this coming through.. Depending on final pricing, I'll be in for 1-2 of whatever is offered. I'd like a PSU as well. Thanks for all the hard work guys!

The Peluso 2247 bodies are actually pretty nice, don't know if anyone has actually used/seen one, but they don't feel cheap at all.

I just had a great idea...

The capsule mounting plate (which was going to be made from Aluminum)
could instead be made from acrylic.

This seems like a good idea to me especially considering that a few people have commented on insulation problems with Chinese capsule mounts.

Also, thinking about including an acrylic spacer, emulating the dimensions of the one on the original.

So, the finished product would look something like this:

Note: this is not the final hole configuration for these plates.
