hah...
sorry, OT

OK so these two are for Jakob...

For simplicity/convenience I like the G7 circuit, and have heard excellent reviews of the sound. However I have a few questions with compatibility. I was wondering if instead of the Ludhall, I could use a Sowter 9995.

Also I know it is a variable pattern design, however I would love to adapt it to use a Blue B4 capsule if possible. I assume I can remove it from it's head basket and install it in this mic. I believe they are incapable of being anything but omni, but maybe I am wrong. REALLY I would just love that M50 flavor to leak in a little bit... If you have any other ideas for a capsule that can achieve this, please let me know.

Instead of a U47 clone, I would love to find my own sweet little custom mic sound... Hence the idea of the M50 flavor... If you have any other suggestions, or maybe a completely different circuit to make it work, please let me know!

Thanks!

Just what I´m trying to do
A good source for ef 86 tube?

Matti

There's some russian ebay seller that has tubes with good prices. I ordered few Tungsram and Tesla NOS ef86 tubes for test. Haven't received them yet though.

I've had some luck with ebay, although it's always a gamble with how those act in the actual HIGH impedance mic circuit.

Then there's is this which I will definitely try http://www.banzaieffects.com/product.php?productid=20808

Svetlana's are no good for mics I hear. Super microphonics and overall bad sound.

oops. Sorry for off topic.

I had some trouble finding a low noise EF86, so I opted for an EF804S...  hand selected for low noise.  It's pretty much the same
tube as the EF806S but with a different pinout.... I only had to swap 2 pins in the MK7 layout.

Hard to say without having the parts around. I'd say try it..

As for using G7 with an omni capsule, that shouldn't be any problem - just ignore the back-membrane connection (and skip the pattern-switching on the powersupply)

A good quality tube that works well with the G7 (with a minor mod) is the PF86. This is a 300ma series-heated version of the EF86, and plenty NOS are available at very low prices, mainly because the hifi-people don't use this. To use PF86, adjust heater voltage to 4.5V (in stead of the 6.3V for the EF86) - or put three or four 1A-diodes (e.g. 1N4001) in series with the heater supply, either inside the microphone (which gives psu-compability with EF86-equipped G7's) or inside the powersupply.

PF86's were manufactured at the peak of tube technology, so most of them are better than anything produced today.

Odd... I have had GREAT luck with getting tubes on Ebay... Though generally I notice that NOS tubes seemed to be sold in matched pairs. Which is great for making a stereo pair, or for circuits that need two of the same tube.

As for me I have luck with the following as well...

www.tubeworld.com
www.audiotubes.com
www.tubedepot.com
http://www.vacuumtube.com

I like tubeworld the best, because they provide a run down on every company they have in stock and not just their quality in general, but on that specific tube.

Thanks Jakob for the response... I think I might go omni only, for the sole fact that the capsule is supposed to be based on the M50, which is my all time favorite mic... mmmmm... m50.... ::drool::

I plan on doing two mics this year. So this one I may stick to the Gyraf with a M7 head... and then use the omni in the Gyraf layout for the other. The other one I am getting the body from www.diymic.com and pretty much throwing out everything but the body. lol...

quote :"Does anyone know if you can buy a M7 from Flea and for how much?"

Which M7 from Flea?

Flea offers their 47 mic with a choice or genuine Neumann capsule, K47 or K67, or with an M7 (whichever that is suposed to mean..!)
They also build the F7 which is their Lolipop version of the M7. You could probably buy this one...

About their "inhouse" M7, it seems that they build the backplate, and Siegfried Thiersh takes care of the diaphragm.

I'm curious if these will be ready by 4th of July?
Jeeez, I hope so!

I'm sick of waiting!

Still waiting for a quote from the wire cloth guys.
Still waiting for prototype round III.

I think what I will do is have the "body" shop finish the body tube & end cap by bead-blasting + hard anodize.
Meanwhile the wire cloth guys will make the headbaskets and finish them with a polished (bright) nickel plate.

Everything gets shipped to me...I ship to you!
