Re: BC184C: for testing, I'd go with the straight BC184. The ones with the "L" in them have their collector in the middle, rather than the base (i.e. different pinout.)

Just to remember, originally N*V* called for BC-184C, with HFE selected ABOVE 600. Thats to maintain low noise. In my experience, about 20% of any batch meets this requirement.

My two cents.

well that's interesting.
am I wrong in assuming that much variance is less likely now?

i have spent time matching germaniums for fuzz face clones etc but i thought 'wildly' different values pretty much disappeared with the arrival of silicon transistors?

if that's not the case then,  i could even be persuaded to buy a larger batch and sort through checking hfe.

is that on the original schematic or build notes then?

BC184L will have a different pin out, so unless confident at leg crossing etc.. I'd avoid.

Bit of pain that mouser have run out really. They've always had loads in stock.

Digikey have them in stock (for those getting the DC-DC converter from there anyway.)

Otherwise, local ebays?

OR.. if you aren't too bothered about 'authenticity' and want to experiment with some alternatives, (or even as a temporary measure (they'll all be socketed anyway, so easy to exchange) there's a whole heap of different transistors you could use.. BC107, BC109, MPSA18  etc..etc..  (obviously, will have to check the pins)

The DC-DC converter is fully isolated, so it uses the full 32V that a lunchbox can supply (not 16V)

For schematic, the part designations are the same as a 1073 schematic. So you could use that .. or I'm finishing up a version too..  (If there's discrepencies between the AMS site's, just ask, as this schematic's a work in progress, so to speak)  NV73schematic

(PS. The PCB has part designations and part values)

Guess what came in the post...  Some lovely front panels.

So... long time coming, but the time is here I guess.

So I've set up a basic webpage with the details I've posted in this thread in a (hopefully) more compact way. There's bound to be some web/grammar issues, but I'll get it tweaked in the next few days. And also add more info as we go.... (incl manual which isn't quite finished yet)  If website doesn't work for anyone then let me know, and I'll (hopefully!) fix it.

So feel free to order it from the paypal button on NV73 diy kit

Thanks for all your motivation/help/interest!

Meanwhile I'm off to see if there may be a little room in the white market for me...

and that's the first of probably MANY reasons why I'll never be a web builder!

Give me a min, and I'll see if I can fix it

Thanks

my paycheck feels like its so far away!

Hopefully can find that dc-dc converter somewhere else than digikey! Unfortunately although studio A will have my G511 rack.... studio b wont :( and thats where two of these babies are gonna live.

Hopefully you stock more in the future!!
