Scratch Fairchild 660 Worth it?

The Poorchild 660 by Analag and Silent Art is one of the best, if not the best, DIY mu-comp project of all time imo.

There is no doubt that these are respectable projects. I also believe that a solid-state side-chain is perfectly capable of delivering the same performance as that in a true Fairchild.
What I contest is when someone says that a side-chain based on a dual triode with no significant iron is capable of delivering the same perfomance.
Or that the same performance as a quartet of 6386's can be achieved with a single dual vari-mu tube.

Would he still have used vari-mu tubes with associated iron, when objectively better gain control elements are available? Then he may not have needed the power amp in the side-chain...

Build one with 8x 6ba6, if i have to do one again i’m going with a ss sidechain.
But is a very educational project, after that you can build anything and know how a good sounding circuit sounds

Yes something to be said for the mojo-factor and the challenge of building the real thing to original specs. Authenticity counts in addition to the final sound on this one me thinks.

Anyone have a schemo for the SS sidechain and psu? Or one from another project that would work?

I’m interested in a ss schematic too, i’ve always been interested in replacing the 6v6s and the output transformer with high power mosfets.
I think it’s impossible to build one with exact same specs or mojo, the most interesting part for me is to understand how a topology sounds, and with comp you know you are on the mount everest

The new 670 from Telefunken has not many parts used in an original , even the look of the back is that of a new creation...

Inside are values used in the 660 , so it is not a clean reproduction , more the next clone...

I hope to have 1 audio path recreated at the end of the year , using only parts used in an original.

Most I collected the last 15 years , also 3 schematics with minor differences in the side chain and the power supply.

The 660 and 670 used 4 tubes between the transformers , only the resistors and capacitors differ.

For the power supply and side chain different tubes were used. ( Like CJ mentioned , different designers... )

For the placement watched many photo's.

Sometime next year , power supply or side chain...
