Hi guys,

got all the 18v sorted to supply the balancing board, hadnt wired in a 0v so was getting strange voltage readings.
Meter comes on half way on GR and goes to left when on VU, i dont seem to get anything on the input but there seems to be noise there on output. will have a fiddle and see if i can get to the bottom of it.

regards

Spence.

Thank you Jakob for your answer! It seems that the meter I'm having is some kind of VU -meter though. (this one 24V http://frontpanels.de/gyraf-diy-projects/gyraf-g-1176/)

Or is it not VU-meter at all?

I used the search and read all posts including words "vu meter" but I didn't find any "solution"  :)

Thanks,
Henrik

Looking for some pointers. My 1176 was working fine except one thing which i'll come to soon. But after a while the VU just gets pinned to the right in G.R mode and i get about +6vdc on it. It was working perfectly before so i dont think i have any values messed up. Could it be Q10 that broke? Or something else?
Also what havnt worked at all is the Q. Bias adjustment, nothing happens when i turn it. I've swapped the trimpot but nothing.

If anyone could point me in the right direction i would be happy. I'm sorry if it's been discussed before but i couldnt find anything when i searched.

The QBias needs to be set before anything.  Start with getting that working.

The Qbias is pretty simple to sort.  Which PCB are you using the G1176?

It maybe a DC meter as Jakob mentioned.  If there is no bridge rectifier you either need a different meter, or just build one with 4 low V-drop diodes.

Hi!

Thank you a LOT for you help guys! Now I'm having fully working VU-meter going on!

For bridge rectifier I used germanium diodes purchased from local dealer. I also tried 1n4148's which worked fine too. I just soldered those straight to the meter connectors. I'll try to put picture here soon.

One weird thing is still going on. Or is it normal that when using 5M pot on release there's no compression when pot is full CW (fastest). Even when attack is slowest position (CCW). maybetoofastforcompression?. When turning back a little it works just fine.

Again thank's for your help.

Hey Mike!

Nevermind, i missed changing <18> when i changed trimpots. Fully working now :)

Hi guys,

had some very strange goings on!! a dead short on the board so had to retrack it!!! weird looked a good pcb?
ive got the wrong VU meter in it so this will be done after i get it work correctly.
when the ratio is turned clockwise it goes really loud kinda cuts in and out as well? very strange?
also the attack and release dont seem to do very much?
when setting the ratio to 20:1 there is a crackley pop when putting drums through it, doesnt sound very nice.
input and output work thought!!!! :)

HI Guys,

starting to get a bit frustrated with this unit now, im a bit confused about the screening as shown on the schematic, at one point in the middle it shows a stereo jack or what it looks like? this is very confusing as if it is a stereo jack i have not implemented this!?
are there any pictures of where and exactly how to screen this unit please?
My unit is extremely low on signal very faint, VU meter works, but hardy any signal comes out?
help!!!!! :)

Sounds like you see the stereo link connector by pin 7?

HI hairball,

yeah its the J1 connector, ah so thats a stereo connector, so if i built another unit i would just connect this?
R36 keeps overheating now?
as i said before this pcb board i got seems to have loads going wrong with it as found a dead short on some tracks!!!!?
also slightly confused about the output +/- and COM screened bit as this connects after the transformer and im not using a transformer im using a balancing board?
if anyone could explain this please?
also does the release need to be screened?
the attack i have put in screen leads but cant work out where to attach the actual screens? as on the schematic it is not clear to me, if this could also be explained please.

Spence.

HI Guys,

R36 overheating turned out to be Q9 (BD140) replace 100ohm and Q9 and is fine.
have screened everything now as per schematic and understand it a bit better but no audio passes through the unit, there is definitely output as when i turn it on i can hear it power up.
have also put a nice bright white LED behind the VU meter as use a 4.7k to bring the voltage down.
i must have missed something so will hunt again for the problem.

HI Guys,

further investigation its seems the 1176 is not compressing? on the oscilloscope it looks as though it was doing something but when putting drums through the unit there is not difference between when it is on or off? it looks as though it is working but its not?
anyone please help!!!! where should i start i've pretty much been over this unit from the top to the bottom?
aaaahhhh!!!!!! :)

Hi Guys,

did comparison with Bomb factory BF76  and there is  definitely no compression happening, have gone through most of the 181 threads to find an answer but all i cant find is someone saying to check all solder joints!! which i will do first before loosing my mind!! :)

regards

Spence.

HI Guys,

little update (bet your sick of me now!!! :))

found a solder joint which had lifted so re soldered and now im getting a little compression so i know the unit is nearly working!!!
attack and release dont seem to have any effect?
low frequency noise/hum is present?
volume jumps when switching between ratios?

will investigate but if anyone could shed some light i would be most grateful.

Check your grounding.  Have a read through the MNATS wiring guide for the Hairball builds, it's a different version but all the same grounding best practices should apply.
