I wanted to make a note about quality to those who will be getting a mic from batch 1 soon:

After a long and arduous process dealing with our manufacturer to meet our quality expectations, we eventually made the decision to fulfill your orders knowing that some discrepancies may be apparent on the mic bodies upon receipt. This was discussed earlier in this thread.
The main things that we know are not going to meet our requirements are (1) the top mesh offset issue (2) slight body tube striping.
For further description of these issues, read back a few pages or email me.

After QA-ing the shipment, I found about 20 units (give or take a few—I forget the exact number) that exhibited various problems beyond the two issues above. I felt these units were just too defective to ship.

I also found 7 units with dimples in the center of the top mesh.
I straightened these out by hand.

Finally, I found a handful of units with headbasket screws that were so tightly driven, that I striped or nearly striped them during removal.
Don't worry, we included top-quality replacement screws for the headbasket in every order.

I want everyone to be aware that in the interest of time, I could not check every unit. In fact, half of the units were not checked.
So there is a small chance (~7%) that you may have a dimpled top mesh or screws that are difficult to remove.
The headbasket dimpling is easy to fix by hand, and you won't be able to tell it was ever dimpled. Just be be cautious of wire mesh that may snag your skin when handling the headbasket interior.

When removing the screws from the headbasket, it is important to use a snug-fitting phillips screwdriver.
You must be very careful when removing these screws or they will strip. We have provided screws of better quality in the package for you to use once these are removed.

If you have any concern whatsoever, please email me!

 I guess I am one of the unlucky 20.  Anyways keep my order in line for the next batch.  Inwould be interested in shockmounts as well.

Ok, I've opened a new thread, a feeler for the capsule PLUS the holder :

An Error Has Occurred!
The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you.

I am also interested in this group buy for the capsule, but like the person above, I am apparently forbidden from seeing the new thread??

Yes, sorry, I posted to quickly on the white market, my apologies...  :(

I'm waiting for the green light to open a feeler in the black market and I may have good news on Thiersch's side !  ;)

just got mine , a few dings in the bottom bell cap but all in all pretty good shape . works well with first round shock mounts

Received mine today also.  Thanks, Skylar!  It was very well packed.  Unfortunately, mine has a bit of the banding going on, but not a huge deal.  When the shock mount is placed on it, they won't be visible or noticed.  My only minor disappointment (again, very minor considering the effort that went into this and the cost of the item) is that the chrome seems "thin" for lack of a better description.  Typical Chinese stuff.  Not the copper/nickel/chrome plating that has that nice heft to it.  Again, this is a very minor disappointment on my part alone.  The finish is actually very nice and quite attractive.  I can't wait until my MK47 kit arrives any moment now and for my Thiersch capsule and mount to arrive in another month or so.  It's gonna be a good summer!

Now you head over to Eskimo Joe's and have a beer for a job well done!

Got mine!!!!!  ;D

Very pleased indeed.

Hard to believe just how long this project has been brewing (original thread started December 4th 2008), from those early posts, to Skylar taking the challenge, then slowly but surely getting this to the point of manufacture to the slow boat from China.... and here it is in my hot little hand!!! All the wait well worth it.

Thanks Skylar for making this happen

Time to put all my bits together!

THanks for the heads up.

Unfortunately, one try and some of the screws I attempted to remove have stripped.  (You should have removed (or loosened) these screws for us prior to shipment if you were checking the screws already -- or did I misunderstand?)

The small screw at the bottom is even more difficult on mine because of its small head and therefore impossible to apply adequate force for removal.  You need to replace this screw too.

In fact, ALL my screws arrived somewhat pre-stripped due to the factory-applied over-torquing.  It appears the factory applied so much force during assembly that they began stripping the screw heads.  I don't dare touch the remaining screws after seeing how bad these are now.  The metal is so poor it smears immediately and the head gets stripped.

How do we remove these?   :)  The next option is to drill them out, but then we may have drilled out the threads!

I wonder if my next step should be to drill off the head of the screw(s).  Will I be able to remove the shaft of the screw afterwards?  Will the body come free with just the heads drilled off or will there be some shaft remaining in the hole(s)?

Really they should be a high quality metal, like stainless steel.   If you look at a real U47 or other quality mic these screws are always high quality and have a polished look.  They don't strip.  Even cheap Chinese mics have adequate screws with harder metal than these.

I think I may need to return my bodies to you so you can properly remove the screws.  I'm afraid I will not have better luck on the remaining ones.  I carefully used two different screwdrivers, in fact three.  But once a screwdriver applies torque the soft metal just smears if the screws are too tight....

I also have severe striping.  They'll have to be painted or coated, it's just too obvious.  (But at these prices I'll live with it.  Next stop: get a quote from the local metal plating shop.)   ;)

I know you went through heroic efforts... many thanks, and all that, etc.  We just need to get over these final hurdles.

EDIT: I've had some success using a different type of screwdriver.  One small screw actually was already loose because the threads were already stripped -- we'll have to rethread its endcap.

Still work to do.  It's really a pity the factory chose to cut corners.  Thanks to Skylar for supporting us.

If anyone is so pissed off at the screws, binders, severe striping, etc. that they want to return, I'll buy 2 bodies for what you paid plus shipping and PayPal fees.
PM me.
Best,

Returned home from Memphis today and found two beautiful equ47 bodies waiting (as well as two mk47 kits).

Many Thanks Skylar !!

I will post more detailed comments later in the lab thread but I am very happy with these. One thing I noticed is that the top middle screw is not threaded on both of my bodies. The two top side screws thread into the side-rails.

Now moving on to the build phase. :)

Best,
Jonathan
