Holy crap, that's amazing. Gawd help me, i thought I'd been able to give this up!! I suppose I might have to buy one. Gah. *must tear self away*

Hurray on the Thiersch Mount! Mine should hopefully arrive next week.

I know many are looking at the cheap Chinese mounts, but seriously it isn't THAT much more to go to a hand made German mount like the Thiersch.

Mr. Thiersch has done work for Neumann/Gefell for YEARS and this mount is prob the closest thing you will get it look and feel to the REAL U47 mount and I think I paid 65 Euros including Airmail shipping.

The Chinese mounts and standoff's are going for $50USD ex shipping and won't get you to the 45mm height center to base height that the U47 was designed to have. Also no offense to Burdji but I requested to be added to the list for his Chinese mounts over a month ago, it never happened, and I don't think he has been seen/heard from since.

I asked about the Thiersch mount with them, got pricing, paid and had it shipped all within a week.

Cheers

Matt

I totally agree that the Thiersch STS-7 mount is the most ideal solution and costs 45€.
The good news is that if you don't want to pay that much, Thiersch just added a couple of new mounts that are even more affordable.

These are all made in Thiersch's shop.
I do not have either of these mounts, so I cannot verify whether or not they meet the 45mm height spec.
EDIT: I should mention that these mounts are also designed for different capsules, so you may want to contact Thiersch to verify that the cheaper mounts will work with whatever capsule you're using.

Also, look for lewilson's post in the Black Market.

He's got very nice looking mounting rings that appear close to the originals.
I'm not sure if he's got the rubber mounts too, so you should ask.

I haven't talked to lewilson in person, but I know from other members that he is reputable.

So, the shop is now working with me to correct the mistakes and get a new prototype made to fix the errors.
The tolerances on these parts are excellent; everything fits together really well and feels very solid.

an update:
I have spoken with the shop, and they are already working on a new set of prototypes, adjusting for the errors.

So another couple weeks probably of wait time?

Skylar, one more design question.  ;D  Forgive me if I missed it earlier in the thread... but how do we afix the screens to the headbasket top band?

I have several points to ask about that and the headbasket & mesh in general:  We'll use solder, presumably with a flame and flux like with soldering copper pipe to afix the mesh?

I know there was some discussion about how solder and the various metals will accept nickel plating... will the stainless steel be solderable, and nickelable?  :D

Is the top dome a separate set of mesh from the cylindrical part below?  Attached separately?

If so, I see there's just a tiny lip there on the top of the band (see photo above) to attach it to... is this how it's going to fit?  How does one cut the mesh(es) to align evenly along that rim, seems tricky... I suppose with a template to mash the mesh into place, then trim the excess with snips would work like a jiffy.  You planning something like that?

Is the entire headbasket going to be plated?  Or only the framing, not the mesh?

And finally, if I buy an assembled kit, may I request having the finest mesh omitted when the headbasket is assembled? In other words, just the two coarser meshes instead of all three.

Maybe I should have sent this by PM, but it might be useful info for others...
Thanks.

From what I had understood I thought Skylar was going to be doing that himself with the complete/assembled kit.

Are Thiersch's M7s drilled to accept this mount then?

Thiersch's STW-7 (his M7 capsule) is not drilled at all.
It's held into the STS-7 mount through pressure applied by 3 set screws.

Any mounts or capsules other than the STW-7 & STS-7 I know nothing about (because I have not seen them in person).
So, I would recommend asking the folks at Thiersch about those.
